MIAMI, Fla. (March 10, 2007) -- The University of Connecticut rowing team opened its spring season on Saturday with a successful day against the University of Miami and Barry University.
The UConn junior varsity eight started the day by beating Miami. The Huskies fell behind the first half of the race, but made a big move to pull ahead and eventually won by 11.1 seconds. That UConn boat consisted of senior Gabbey LaChance (Mystic, Conn.), junior Arielle Shiely (Clinton, Conn.), freshman Theresa Nolan (Atlantic City, N.J.), junior Monica Parker (Glastonbury, Conn.), junior Maddie Bey (South Windsor, Conn.), freshman Rebecca Likar (East Lyme, Conn.), freshman Sarah Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.), freshman Megan Kielty (West Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Stephanie Bryant (Natick, Mass.).
The UConn varsity eight was next and had a strong race against Barry. Barry led from the beginning, but never by more than half a length. UConn took a big move at the 1,000 meter mark, cutting Barry's lead to only a few seats. In the last stroke, UConn pulled ahead and won by half a second. That UConn boat consisted of senior Katie Beasley (Centerville, Mass.), freshman Kelly Murphy (Marietta, Ga.), junior Olga Solovyova (New London, Conn.), senior Erin Andersen (Barrington, R.I.), junior Kelly McGary (Lewisville, N.C.), sophomore Katherine Les (South Windsor, Conn.), senior Nicole Rapp (Mansfield, Conn.), sophomore Kali Garges (Queche, Vt.) and senior Kerri Mocko (Stafford Springs, Conn.).
The UConn novice eight broke into two fours to race Miami and UConn did an excellent job -- rowing technically well. The UConn A boat of freshman Leah Masopust (Morris, Conn.) freshman Deborah Chesser (Albany, N.Y.), freshman Elizabeth Dargie (Waterford, Conn.), freshman Jennifer Reynolds (South Hero, Vt.) and freshman Kristen Beasley (Centerville, Mass.) and the B boat of junior Heather Dwyer (Brewster, N.Y.), junior Lindsay Mackay (Lisbon, Conn.), sophomore Stephanie Lamothe (Wallingford, Conn.), freshman Kathryn Rauscher (Manchester, Conn.) and junior Kylie Calzone (Redding, Conn.) led Miami from the start. Miami caught a crab in the first minute of racing and the race was restarted from the 1,700 meter mark.
The UConn novice four boat of junior Kelly Dwyer (Brewster, N.Y.), sophomore Julie Konstantino (Orangne, Conn.), freshman Alicia Cairns (Waterford, Conn.), freshman Sade Owoye (Danbury, Conn.) and junior Brynne Davies (Middleburry, Conn.) raced Barry’s novice four and also led the entire way down the course.
The final race of the day was the varsity four and the UConn boat was junior Heather Dwyer (Brewster, N.Y.), junior Ally Zoppa (East Hartford, Conn.), sophomore Heather Gates (Monmouth Beach, N.J.), senior Michelle Stathers (Tolland, Conn.) and senior Kathryn Dobbins (Southington, Conn). They raced Barry and won in one of the closest races of the day – a margin of five seconds. The Huskies were very fast off the line and held their lead over the 2,000 meter course.
UConn next races St. Joseph's on Sunday, March 25 in Philadelphia.
