BALTIMORE, Md. (March 13, 2007) - Senior Shannon Burke (Camillus, N.Y.) earned Inside Lacrosse player of the week honors after guiding the University of Connecticut women's lacrosse team to their third straight victory and fourth this season, as announced on the magazine's Web site Tuesday.
Burke led the Huskies' (4-1) offensive effort in each of the team's two games last week, helping produce victories over UC Davis and California. She put back two goals and six assists Wednesday against the Aggies before taking on Cal Friday, where she led the attack with four goals and four assists in the 13-12 decision.
Burke has been a force so far in 2007 under first-year head coach Megan Cersosimo, striking for a team-high 15 goals and 22 assists. Her 37 points on the year are 22 more than anyone else on the UConn roster. Additionally, with her performance vs. Cal, Burke broke UConn's all-time assist record, previously set at 63. She now holds 67 to her credit with at least 12 games to go in the season.
The Huskies return to action Wednesday, March 14 with a match against Harvard at 3 p.m. at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. This begins a four-game homestand with contests against Loyola (Mar. 17), Towson (Mar. 21) and Syracuse (Mar. 24) also coming up on the docket.
