Women's Volleyball Defeats Marquette in Five

STORRS, Conn. (November 3, 2007) - Sophomore Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded 20 kills as the University of Connecticut women's volleyball team defeated Marquette 3-2 (30-17, 31-29, 39-41, 20-30, 15-13) in BIG EAST play on Saturday afternoon in Gampel Pavilion.
The Huskies entered today's match after a 3-0 week last week, as UConn continued to stay hot and attack the opponent's defensive set-up.
Game one was dominated by UConn, as the Huskies recorded 15 kills and just two hitting errors while they forced seven hitting errors on the visiting Marquette program. Seabaugh led the way in game one, recording five kills in 11 attempts. Sophomore setter Bridget Denson-Dorman (Golden Valley, Minn.) dished out 15 assists in game one to lead the way for the Huskies.
UConn picked up the second game win, as Seabaugh added five more kills and senior Sadé Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) chipped in six.
The third game was a marathon for both teams. Points went back and forth for the two programs before Marquette closed the game out with a 41-39 win. Seabaugh added six more kills in the third while freshman Lauren Lamberti (Cary, Ill.) recorded six kills as well. Missed serves troubled both programs as UConn committed five in the third game while the Golden Eagles had two.
Marquette came out in the fourth game and dominated play both on offense and at the net. The Golden Eagles picked up 13 blocks in the game while the Huskies committed nine hitting errors, recording a .070 percentage.
The Golden Eagles combined for 39 kills in the third and fourth games while the Huskies recorded 36.
Game five was a battle to the finish as the lead was exchanged back and forth until the Huskies took a 13-11 lead and snuck by the Golden Eagles just in time. At 14-13, Lamberti ended the match with a kill straight through the Marquette defense, to give the Huskies the 15-13 victory.
Denson-Dorman finished the afternoon with 71 assists and 14 digs while Seabaugh recorded another double-double for the Huskies. Seabaugh's 20 kills and 11 digs led the UConn program to a crucial BIG EAST Conference victory. Chambers ended the match with 18 kills, adding another impressive effort to her career tallies while Lamberti added 18 kills, a career-high for the freshman. Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) recorded 13 kills while senior Gina Heiderman (Niles, Ill.) chipped in with 10. Heiderman also led the Huskies with five total blocks, including four block assists.
Marquette was led by Kim Todd, who had a match-high 23 kills while Ashlee Fisher added 17 kills in the loss. Katie Weidner, the Golden Eagles setter handed out 63 assists but was called for ball handling errors six times. Three other Golden Eagles earned double-digit kill marks.
UConn, now 16-9 and 6-5 in BIG EAST play, will return to action on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. as they face Syracuse for another important BIG EAST match-up.
