Women's Volleyball Sweeps Central Connecticut 3-0

STORRS, Conn. (October 24, 2007) - Senior Sadé Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) recorded a team-high 15 kills as the University of Connecticut women's volleyball team defeated Central Connecticut State University 3-0 (30-16, 30-27, 30-19) in non-conference action on Wednesday night in Gampel Pavilion.
The Huskies came right out of the gate, controlling the pace of the match in game one by holding the Blue Devils to just five kills in 33 attempts. Central recorded nine hitting errors in the first game while posting a negative hitting percentage.
UConn had a solid game one, recording 16 kills in 38 total tries. In game two, both teams picked up their energy, while the Huskies recorded 21 kills in 50 attempts to the Blue Devils' 11 kills in 46 tries. During game two alone, the score was tied a total of six times.
The Huskies dominated in game three, controlling the Blue Devil offense completely. Senior Gina Heiderman (Niles, Ill.) recorded five block assists in game three alone to add to her match total of seven, while improving her career mark to 119. Freshmen Lauren Lamberti (Cary, Ill.) and Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) each added five block assists, including two apiece in game three alone. Freshman defensive specialist Margot Deméré (Encinitas, Calif.) picked up four digs in game three and finished the night with eight total.
Chambers had a stellar performance, hitting .344 with 15 kills and just four errors to go with two digs and two total blocks.
UConn recorded 28 total blocks on the match, including 26 block assists in the three-game win.
Sophomore Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) recorded a team-high 13 digs while sophomore setter Bridget Denson-Dorman (Golden Valley, Minn.) handed out 44 assists. Murray added 12 kills for the Huskies while Lamberti chipped in with 10.
Central Connecticut was led by setter Amanda Bayer, who recorded 23 assists and seven digs for the Blue Devils. Katie Karkow had a team-high eight kills in the loss as Central falls to 17-5 overall this season.
The battle of the two Connecticut schools will air Thursday, Oct. 25 on tape delay at 8:00 p.m. on Cox Sports Television.
UConn, now 13-9 overall, will return to action this weekend as they host BIG EAST rival Notre Dame on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2:00 p.m. in Gampel Pavilion.
