BOSTON, Mass. (September 6, 2006) – Behind 13 kills from Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.), the University of Connecticut volleyball team remains perfect at 5-0 after defeating Northeastern 3-0 (30-26, 32-30, 30-23) on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
The Huskies traded points with Northeastern the entire game with neither team gaining more than a three point edge until freshman Bridget Denson-Dorman (Maple Grove, Minn.) served up four straight points to put UConn up 24-23. The Huskies pulled away after kills from Seabaugh and freshman Devon Farrell (Lafayette, Calif.) before junior Gina Heiderman (Niles, Ill.) sealed game one with a kill.
Game two was much like the first as both teams battled for every point. Northeastern went on an early 4-0 run to go up 7-4, but the Huskies fought back behind steady serving from Issac. Junior Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) came up big when UConn needed it most with kills to even the score at 20-20 and then again at 23-23. Seabaugh played like a seasoned veteran late in the game with a kill and service ace before the Huskies won 32-30.
Game three went back and forth before Heiderman stepped to the service line and put the Huskies ahead 10-6. Two straight Northeastern attack errors pushed the lead to 14-8. UConn went on a run behind serves from Seabaugh and kills from Heiderman to make the score 23-13. With a kill, Farrell sealed the match for the Huskies.
Denson-Dorman had a match-high 45 assists, her fifth straight match-high of the season. She leads the BIG EAST in assists, averaging 13.25 per game. Chambers added 11 kills for the Huskies while Heiderman had eight. Issac chipped in 10 digs.
The last time UConn got the season off to a 5-0 start was back in 2001. The Huskies look to continue their winning ways when they play host of the UConn Classic this weekend. Action gets underway when Northern Illinois and Quinnipiac face off on Friday at 5 p.m. UConn takes the floor at 7:30 p.m. against Boston College.
