Volleyball Defeated by Cincinnati 3-1

STORRS, Conn. (September 29, 2006) – Junior Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had a team-high 13 kills but the University of Connecticut volleyball team fell to BIG EAST foe Cincinnati 1-3 (26-30, 30-26, 25-30, 24-30) on Friday, Sept. 29, in Storrs, Conn.
The Huskies (11-5, 1-2 BIG EAST) and the Bearcats (11-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) traded points early in game one before Cincinnati was able to capitalize on three straight points to go up 10-8. A kill from freshman Bridget Denson-Dorman (Maple Grove, Minn.) tied the score at 12-12. Junior Gina Heiderman (Niles, Ill.) stepped to the service line and fired off an ace to give UConn the lead at 15-14. The Huskies scored four unanswered points behind two kills from Chambers with freshman Devon Farrell (Lafayette, Calif.) adding one to push the lead to 19-15, forcing a Cincinnati timeout. A Heiderman and Denson-Dorman block capped off a UConn three-point swing to push the Bearcats into another timeout. Cincinnati wouldn’t back down as they scored the final eight points of the game to win 30-26.
The two teams again traded points back and forth early in the second game before the Huskies were able to go on a 5-0 run, highlighted by two service aces from junior Julie Pickard (Hillsborough, N.C.) to go up 10-6. Three straight kills by UConn extended the lead to 17-10. With Heiderman behind the service line, the Huskies fired off two straight kills and a service ace to sport a 10 point lead at 25-15. The Bearcats would score six unanswered points late in the game to close the lead to 27-24, but a kill from freshman Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.) would seal game two for the Huskies 30-26.
Cincinnati came out of the 10 minute intermission to score five straight points to take an early 7-2 lead behind steady serving from Jenny Custer. Sophomore Lorelle Schaub (New Brighton, Minn.) came up with a huge block to close the gap for the Huskies at 7-9. A service ace by Pickard and a kill from Schaub late in the game got UConn to within one point of the Bearcats at 24-25, but Custer came up big for Cincinnati as she had a block and a kill to allow the Bearcats to take game three, 30-25.
In game four, both teams battled back and forth with neither team gaining more than a two point edge before senior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) had a kill followed by a huge block assisted by sophomore Sarah Singer (Waukesha, Wisc.) to give UConn a 15-12 lead. The Bearcats came back and took the lead after two straight blocks made the Huskies take a timeout with the score reading 18-22 in favor of Cincinnati. Jessica Elley came up with two big kills late in the game to allow the Bearcats to win the final game 30-24 and to take the match.
Seabaugh finished the night with 11 kills while Farrell and Silver both had 10. Heiderman added nine. Freshman Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) had a huge night with a career-high 35 digs while Denson-Dorman led the team with 49 assists. Farrell had 13 digs while Seabaugh and Chambers each had 10.
The Huskies finished the match with a season-high 16 total team blocks.
UConn looks to bounce back against Louisville on Sunday, October 1. Match time is set for 12:30 p.m.
