Huskies Sweep Portland State 3-0
SPOKANE, Wash. (September 2, 2006) – Led by sophomore Sarah Singer (Waukesha, Wisc.) who tallied 12 kills, the University of Connecticut volleyball team defeated Portland State, 3-0, on Saturday in Spokane, Wash.
The Huskies (3-0) improve to 2-0 in the Gonzaga Volleyball Classic after defeating Gonzaga 3-0 Friday night.
UConn got off to a quick start in game one to go up 5-1 and never lost the lead. Behind three straight kills by junior Gina Heiderman (Niles, Ill.), the Huskies increased the lead to 21-11. Portland State fought back to make the score 25-21, but after a UConn timeout, the Huskies edged out the Vikings 30-28 to take game one.
Portland State jumped out to an early 5-0 beginning in the second game, but UConn fought back and evened the score at 13-13. Steady serving from Heiderman and freshman Bridget Denson-Dorman (Maple Grove, Minn.) put the Huskies back on top at 20-14, forcing a Viking timout. Singer’s six kills in game two, half her total of the entire match, pushed the score to 30-19 with UConn taking the game.
Game three proved to be the last as Denson-Dorman served up two service aces to take an early 3-1 lead. UConn would see four more service aces over the course of the game. After three straight errors by Portland State and a huge Heiderman block, the Huskies closed out the game and match on a Viking service error.
Heiderman had 11 kills with an impressive .438 hitting percentage. Senior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) had an outstanding match in front of a home-state crowd with nine kills and a .692 hitting percentage. Freshman Kate Seabaugh and sophomore Lorelle Schaub had eight kills apiece.
Denson-Dorman had a match high 41 assists coupled with 13 digs. Freshman Jessica Issac (Erlanger, Ky.) also had a match-high with 15 digs. The Huskies had eight total team blocks.
