Volleyball Defeated by Dayton 3-1

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (September 16, 2006) - The University of Connecticut volleyball team fought back to take game two after losing the first to Dayton, but the Flyers were too much as they went on to take the match, 3-1, on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Minnesota Diet Coke Classic.
The Huskies (8-3) dropped game one 26-30 but came back to take the second 30-27 before losing the final two, 21-30 and 25-30, respectively.
Dayton took an early 12-9 lead in game one before freshman Bridget Denson-Dorman (Maple Grove, Minn.) stepped to the service line, gaining five straight points for the Huskies to go up 14-13. The Flyers came back to regain the lead at 20-18 but junior Gina Heiderman (Niles, Ill.) evened the game at 20-20 off a kill. UConn saved game point on a block by Heiderman and freshman Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.), but Dayton went on to win 30-26.
Game two saw the Huskies taking an early 6-3 lead over the Flyers. Dayton would fight back to even the score at 11-11, but UConn would score the next three points off a kill from senior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) and steady serving from freshman Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) to force a Flyer timeout with the score reading 14-11 in favor of the Huskies. UConn would push the score to 26-20 after key errors by the Flyers before going on to take game two, 30-27.
Dayton jumped out early in game three after the 10 minute intermission on three straight kills from Faye Barnhorst. UConn came out of a timeout down 13-3 to rally off three straight kills. But the Flyers were too much as they took game three 30-21.
UConn tallied four straight points early in game four from junior Julie Pickard's (Hillsborough, N.C.) and two straight blocks by Silver and Farrell. Dayton went on a 4-0 run to take the lead 12-9. The Huskies fought back and with two consecutive kills from Seabaugh the score was tied 24-24. Dayton won the final three points of the game to win 30-25 and take the match.
Junior Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored a season-high 17 kills to lead the team. Heiderman tallied 11 kills with five digs while Farrell also had 11 kills and 14 digs. Seabaugh added 10 kills with 10 digs.
Isaac led the team defensively with 26 digs while Denson-Dorman continues to lead the UConn offense with 52 assists.
The Huskies will take on Tulane in the final match of the Minnesota Diet Coke Classic tonight at 6 p.m.
