WORCESTER, Mass. (June 20, 2006) – Senior Austin Wasserman (Nashua, N.H.) became the fourth Husky to sign a professional contract this spring as he joined the Worcester Tornadoes on June 18. The Tornadoes are an independent team in the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball.
Wasserman transferred to UConn in 2004 from the University of New Orleans. In his two seasons in Husky blue and white, Wasserman left his mark in the record books with the most games played in a single-season with 57. In 2006, Wasserman batted .313 with eight doubles, three triples and a team-high seven home runs. In his career at UConn, Wasserman hit .313 with a total of 19 doubles, seven triples and nine home runs.
With his talent in the field and at the plate, Wasserman helped to lead UConn to one of its most successful seasons to date in 2006. The team broke the season wins record for both the regular season as well as for conference play. The Huskies ended the season with a 39-18-1 overall record and an 18-6-1 record in conference play. This was also the first season since 2000 that the Huskies advanced to the BIG EAST Championship.
Wasserman has appeared in two games for the Tornadoes this season and is currently batting .333 with two hits in six at-bats. He recorded one RBI and walked twice. The Tornadoes stand in third place in the Can-Am with a 13-11 record.
