Rowing Finishes Fifth Overall At BIG EAST Championship

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 30, 2006) - The UConn women's rowing team finished fifth out of nine BIG EAST teams overall. In front of them were Notre Dame, Louisville, Syracuse and Rutgers.
The Second Varsity four boat, consisting of Ally Zoppa (East Hartford, Conn.), Michelle Stathers (Tolland, Conn.), Katie Dobbins (Southington, Conn.), Heather Gates (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) and Heather Dwyer (Brewster, Conn.), had the best performance, sprinting ahead of Rutgers in the last stroke to take second place in a five boat field behind Notre Dame.
The JV 8 team of Gabbey LaChance (Mystic, Conn.), Caitlin Meisinger (Bristol, Conn.), Brooke Grauer (Fairfield, Conn.), Stephanie Chivers (Dalton, Mass.), Erin Andersen (Barrington, R.I.), Kelly McGary (Lewisville, N.C.), Monica Parker (Glastonbury, Conn.), Valerie Voorhees (Liverpool, N.Y.) and Arielle Shiely (Clinton, Conn.) finished fifth in the grand final in a seven boat field.
The Varsity 8, including Katie Beasley (Centerville, Mass.), Alison Elmo (Highland Mills, N.Y.), Christina Cotter (West Seneca, N.Y.), Katie Devonshuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.), Nicole Rapp (Mansfield, Conn.), Kali Garges (Queche, Vt.), Olga Solovyova (New London, Conn.), Erin Bartie (Westport, Conn.) and Kerri Mocko (Stafford Springs, Conn.), finished sixth in the grand final in a nine boat field.
The Varsity 4 of Lauren Chan (Princeton Junction, N.J.), Whitney Peterson (Salem, Mass.), Kara Forman (Manchester, Conn.), Kate Jureller (Fayettville, N.Y.) and Kim Raetz (Niantic, Conn.), finished 2nd in the petite final, putting them eighth in an eight boat field.
The Novice 8 boat of Kristan Joubert (Wappinger, N.Y.), Kellyn Mahan (Danielson, Conn.), Stephanie Bryant (Natick, Mass.), Kathy Les (South Windsor, Conn.), Maddie Bey (South Windsor, Conn.), Sarah Fennell (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Jennifer Seder (Danbury, Conn.), Lauren DeMarco (Queensbury, N.Y.) and Kelly Dwyer (Brewster, N.Y.) finished sixth in a six boat field.
UConn will finish its season at the Dad Vail Championships in Philadelphia in two weeks.
