Rowing Sweeps Villanova

COVENTRY, Conn. (April 14, 2006) - The University of Connecticut women’s rowing team swept Villanova at home on Friday morning. The UConn Varsity 8 came from behind to win with a time of 7:04.2. Villanova came in at 7:07.1. In the boat for UConn were Gabbey LaChance (Mystic, Conn.), Alison Elmo (Highland Mills, N.Y.), Christina Cotter (West Seneca, N.Y.), Katie Devonshuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.), Stephanie Chivers (Dalton, Mass.), Kali Garges (Queche, Vt.), Nicole Rapp (Mansfield, Conn.), Erin Bartie (Westport, Conn.) and Kerri Mocko (Stafford Springs, Conn).
The UConn JV8 beat Villanova’s JV with a time of 7:31.5. Villanova came in at 7:36.2. In the JV for UConn were Katie Beasley (Centerville, Mass.), Monica Parker (Glastonbury, Conn.), Caitlin Meisinger (Bristol, Conn.), Brooke Grauer (Fairfield, Conn.), Olga Solovyova (New London, Conn.), Erin Andersen (Barrington, R.I.), Maddie Bey (South Windsor, Conn.), Kathy Les (South Windsor, Conn.)and Valerie Voorhees (Liverpool, N.Y.).
Both UConn Varsity fours finished well ahead of Villanova’s four. The line-up of Lauren Chan (Princeton Junction, N.Y.), Whitney Peterson (Salem, Mass.), Kelly McGary (Lewisville, N.C.), Kate Jureller (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and Kara Forman (Manchester, Conn.) won the race with a time of 8:05.9. The other UConn four, consisting of Katie Dobbins (Southington, Conn.), Allyson Zoppa (East Hartford, Conn.), Heather Cannon (Wallingford, Conn.), Arielle Shiely (Clinton, Conn.) and Michelle Stathers (Tolland, Conn.) came in second with a time of 8:10.7. Villanova’s Varsity four finished in 8:41.5.
UConn’s Novice 8 split into two fours for the race. The line-up of Kristan Joubert (Wappinger, N.Y.), Kellyn Mahan (Danielson, Conn.), Jen Seder (Danbury, Conn.), Sarah Fennell (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Heather Gates (Monmouth, N.J.) won the race in 8:16.1. The other UConn Novice four, consisting of Heather Dwyer Brewster, N.Y.), Virginia Winslow (Bozrah, Conn.), Molly Berry (Acton, Mass.), Lauren DeMarco (Queensbury, N.Y.) and Stephanie Bryant (Natick, Mass.), came in second with a time of 8:25.8. The Villanova Novice four finished in 8:47.6.
“These wins and the races next weekend are very important for seeding going into the Big East Championships,” said Head Coach Jen Sanford-Wendry.
Next weekend, UConn races Rutgers at Rutgers on Friday and Holy Cross at Worcester on Saturday.
