CAMDEN, N.J. (April 10, 2006) - The University of Connecticut women's rowing team raced at the Knecht Cup over the weekend in Camden, N.J. Bad weather conditions Saturday caused the cancellation of three events that UConn entered. The Novice 4, Second Varsity 4 and Novice 8 were all canceled. The Varsity 8 won their heat and came in second in the semi-final, earning them a spot in the grand finals for the first time in five years. The JV8 raced on Saturday and failed to advance due to a crab caught at the 400-meter to go mark. UConn was in a solid second place at the time of the crab. The Varsity four was second in their heat which earned them a spot in the petite finals.
On Sunday, the Novice 8 raced for time in their heat and earned a spot in the petite finals, where they finished 5th. The Varsity 4 finished second in the petite final. The Varsity 8 was 6th in the grand final behind UMass, Gonzaga, Villanova, Buffalo, and Marist. There were a total of 26 varsity crews that had entered that event.
"Our Varsity goal was to make the final, and they raced two great races on Saturday to get there,” said Head Coach Jen Sanford-Wendry. “Unfortunately we were unable to race to our potential in the final. We'll be making a few line-up changes this week to prepare for our race against Villanova on Friday."
