MIAMI, Fla. (March 12, 2006) - The UConn women's rowing team completed a successful week of training in Miami Florida on Saturday. The UConn Varsity 8 won its race against Barry University. The water was rough, but UConn stayed ahead of Barry and had a one length lead with 750 meters to go. At that point, the Barry crew caught a crab, and UConn took advantage of the situation and finished the race 19 seconds ahead. The varsity eight consisted of Katie Beasley (Centerville, Mass.), Alison Elmo (Highland Mills, N.Y.), Christina Cotter (West Seneca, N.Y.), Katie Devonshuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.), Stephanie Chivers (Dalton, Mass.), Kali Garges (Queche, Vt.), Nicole Rapp (Mansfield, Conn.), Erin Bartie (Westport, Conn.), and Kerri Mocko (Stafford Springs, Conn.) and they raced 2,000 meters in 7:59. Barry was timed at 8:18.
The JV 8 raced the Miami third varsity 8, and finished 26 seconds ahead. Again, in rough conditions UConn raced well and their time was 9:02. Miami was 9:28. The JV 8 consisted of Gabbey LaChance (Mystic, Conn.), Monica Parker (Glastonbury, Conn.), Caitlin Meisinger (Bristol, Conn.), Brooke Grauer (Fairfield, Conn.), Kelly McGary (Lewisville, N.C.), Arielle Shiely (Clinton, Conn.), Erin Andersen (Barrington, R.I.), Heather Cannon (Wallingford, Conn.), and Valerie Voorhees (Liverpool, N.Y.).
The Novice 8 raced Miami closely all the way down the course, but edged out Miami at the end. Kristan Joubert (Wappinger, N.Y.), Kellyn Mahan (Danielson, Conn.), Julie Smith (El Dorado Hills, Calif.), Kathy Les (South Windsor, Conn.), Olga Solovyova (New London, Conn.), Virginia Winslow (Bozrah, Conn.), Molly Berry (Acton, Mass.), Lauren DeMarco (Queensbury, N.Y.), and Stephanie Bryant (Natick, Mass.) raced in at 9:07, while Miami was 9:11.
The Varsity fours finished second and fourth. Miami won the race in 8:42.2, UConn (Ally Zoppa (East Hartford, Conn.), Michelle Stathers (Tolland, Conn.), Katie Dobbins (Southington, Conn.), Heather Gates (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) and LaChance) was second ahead of Barry, and the other UConn four (Lauren Chan (Princeton, N.J.), Whitney Peterson (Salem, Mass.), Kara Forman (Manchester, Conn.), Kate Jureller (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and Kim Raetz (Niantic, Conn.)) was fourth. Times were not recorded for 2nd through 4th.
The Novice four (Heather Dwyer (Brewster, N.Y.), Sarah Fennell (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Maddie Bey (South Windsor, Conn.), Jennifer Seder (Danbury, Conn.) and Kelly Dwyer (Brewster, N.Y.)) lost to Barry University in the last race of the day. They shortened the course to 1000 meters due to the rough conditions and Barry clocked 5:41 while UConn was 5:55.
"I was very pleased with our performance today,” said Head Coach Jennifer Sanford-Wendry. “Barry won the Dad Vail last year in the Division II and III Varsity 8. They are a very fast crew and we showed our speed by leading from the start. The JV8 looked very strong in the last 500, they made a lot of improvements throughout the week. It was great for the Novice 8 to win in their first official spring race, it gave them a taste of what lies ahead. The fours showed that they are going to be very competitive this spring"
UConn started the week with a scrimmage against Miami. The UConn Varsity 4 (Chan, Shiely, Bartie, Stathers, Raetz) did 4 minute pieces with three Miami boats. UConn was close, however Miami won the pieces.
