STORRS, Conn. (December 17, 2006) — Union scored four goals over the final 23 minutes to break open a one-goal game en route to a 7-2 win over the University of Connecticut men’s hockey team Sunday afternoon at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.
Union (7-7-2, 1-5-0 ECAC) opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game when Brendan Milnamow netted his first goal of the season on a one-timer following a pass from Mike Schreiber for the only goal of the first period.
UConn senior Trevor Stewart (Elk River, Minn.) knotted the game at one goal apiece as he scored his fifth goal of the season. Fellow senior Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.) started the attack with a pass to defenseman Brian Burns (Binghamton, N.Y.) into Dutchman territory. Burns then fired on shot on net that was blocked in front of the net where Stewart converted with a power-play goal at the 5:21 mark.
The Dutchmen quickly responded with two unanswered goals scored by T.J. Fox and Michael Beynon, respectively.
Stewart, however, would strike again to cut the Union deficit to 3-2 midway through the second period. Koidahl blasted a shot towards the Dutchman net that was redirected into the goal by Stewart just in front of the crease. Sophomore Sean Erickson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was also credited with an assist on the play. Stewart’s goal marked his sixth goal of the season, setting a new career-high for goals in a season as he surpassed his total of five set as a freshman during the 2003-04 season. It was also the first two-goal game of his career.
Following Stewart’s goal, Union answered with four consecutive goals, including three power-play goals, to take control of the game, eventually winning the contest by a 7-2 tally.
Between the pipes, freshman Beau Erickson (Hinton, Iowa) saw his first action in net since Oct. 27 and recorded seven saves in just over 16 minutes of action. Senior Scott Tomes (Windham, N.H.) suffered the loss despite making 27 saves.
UConn returns to the ice Dec. 29 when the Huskies battle Holy Cross at 7:15 p.m. from the Freitas Ice Forum. The game with the Crusaders will mark the second game of the Toyota UConn Hockey Classic which also pits Colgate vs. Northeastern in the opening game at 4:00 p.m. Both a consolation and championship game will be played Dec. 30 with the consolation game set to begin at 4:00 p.m. The Championship game will follow at 7:15 p.m. Last season the Huskies earned second place in the tournament after falling to Bowling Green in the championship games.
