STORRS, Conn. (November 20, 2006) — The University of Connecticut baseball team has selected seniors Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) and Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass.) as team captains for the 2007 season as announced Monday by head coach Jim Penders.
As a junior infielder in 2006, Donovan saw action in 54 games, drawing starts in each of those contests. He finished the 2006 campaign second on the team in batting average (.341), fourth in runs (45), tied for third in hits (73), tied for first in doubles (17), tied for second in home runs (5), second in RBIs (42) and was first in total bases (107). Donovan also finished the season ranked second in the BIG EAST with 10 doubles during league play.
A catcher who committed just two errors a season ago, Day earned All-BIG EAST Third Team plaudits following an outstanding season at and behind the plate. Day appeared and started a total of 56 games and ended the season fourth on the team with a .332 batting clip. He paced the club in both hits (76) and RBI (51), ranking him tied for eighth in the BIG EAST with his 51 runs driven in. Day also ranked fourth on the team with 12 doubles.
Donovan, Day and the Huskies open the 2007 season with a three-game series at Southern Conference foe Western Carolina beginning Feb. 23.
