Men's Hockey Falls At No. 20 UMass, 8-1

AMHERST, Mass. (November 18, 2006) — UMass erupted for four goals in both the first and third periods as the University of Connecticut men's hockey team dropped an 8-1 decision to the 20th-ranked Minutemen Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center.
Cory Quirk opened the scoring less than a minute into the game to give UMass an early 1-0 edge. Shortly thereafter, Mark Matheson scored the game-winning goal at the 2:35 mark as the Minutemen successfully converted a power play opportunity.
UConn began the second period with its lone goal of the game when freshman Alec Kirschner (Dix Hills, N.Y.) notched his first career goal off passes from senior Jarrett Scarpaci (Billerica, Mass.) and sophomore Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, Minn.) With the assist, Myhro is now tied for the team lead with 12 points and is second on the squad with six helpers.
UMass tacked on four more goals in the third period, highlighted by a pair of goals from Quirk, en route to its fourth consecutive win.
The Huskies, who entered the weekend leading Atlantic Hockey in shots per game, ended the game with a 33-29 shot edge. UConn held a shot advantage in both the first and second periods.
UConn returns to the ice Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. when the Huskies return to conference play with a trip to Holy Cross.
