BOSTON, Mass. (October 22, 2006) --- The University of Connecticut women’s rowing team finished in 38th place in the Championship Eight race at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday. The Championship Eight was the final and most prestigious event of the day.
UConn started with bow number 32 while UMass started with bow number 33. Over the three-mile course, UConn managed to hold off UMass as junior coxswain Katie Beasley (Centerville, Mass.) steered a perfect course, not giving in to any push being made by UMass.
"There are so many turns in this course, the coxswain becomes you're most important player that day,” says UConn head coach Jennifer Sanford. “Katie studied the course maps and was flawless in her steering. Staying ahead of UMass allowed us to stay very aggressive, and overall we were very happy with our performance."
UConn ended up with a time of 17:32.988 and although UConn stayed ahead of UMass, the Minutemen edged UConn out by four seconds, finishing with a time of 17:28.031.
"This is an elite event, with the top United States and international crews,” says Sanford. “Finishing 36th doesn't sound great, but when I look at how we finished in relation to many crews we will race this spring, I am very happy. We came in ahead of, or were in striking distance of, many BIG EAST schools."
