Volleyball Downs DePaul 3-1

Chicago, Ill. (October 20, 2006) - Powered by junior Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) 14 kills and a huge team defensive effort, the University of Connecticut volleyball team defeated DePaul 3-1 (28-30, 30-23, 30-15, 30-17) on Sunday, October 22, in Chicago, Ill.
The Huskies (14-9, 3-5 BIG EAST) took an early lead in game one after a block from senior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) and freshman Devon Farrell (Lafayette, Calif.) to show the score at 7-4. Freshman Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.) gave UConn a lift as she accounted for three of the next five points with two kills and a service ace give the Huskies a 12-7 edge. The Blue Demons fought back and tied the game at 16-16 off a kill from Ellen Hayes. With the game close down to the wire, Chambers used a kill to fight off game point but DePaul came out of a timeout and won the game with a kill from Hayes 30-28.
In game two, the Huskies had a 7-5 advantage over the Blue Demons but Hayes had four consecutive kills to allow DePaul to regain the lead at 9-7 with UConn calling a timeout. The Blue Demons would increase the lead to 13-7, but the Huskies came back strong with kills from Farrell, Chambers and sophomore Lorelle Schaub (New Brighton, Minn.). A block by Schaub and sophomore Sarah Singer (Waukesha, Wisc.) pushed DePaul into a timeout with UConn back in the game at 11-13. The Huskies used four straight kills to regain the lead at 15-14. Points were traded back and forth again before the Huskies rattled off four more kills in a row for a 22-19 lead. Schaub had two kills late in the game to lift the Huskies to win 30-23.
UConn came out of the ten minute intermission with an intensity DePaul couldn't match. The Huskies took a 6-0 lead, fueled by two big blocks from Chambers and Schaub as well as two kills from Chambers and one from Singer in that span. DePaul got on the board after a timeout, but two consecutive kills from Singer would increase the Husky lead to 10-3. UConn continued to stay in control as a block from Silver and freshman Bridget Denson-Dorman (Maple Grove, Minn.) followed by a service ace from freshman Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) showed the score at 24-12. Silver was huge late in the game as she had another block followed by two kills to help UConn to easily take the third game 30-15.
Game four saw the Huskies jumping out to another early lead. A Silver kill followed by to straight service aces from freshman Jessica Adams (Plain City, Ohio) allowed UConn to have an 8-4 advantage. Hayes would keep DePaul in the game, but it was Chambers and Schaub who were big in the end as they each had a kill and a block to give the Huskies game four 30-17 and the match.
Seabaugh had a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs. Silver had 12 kills and six blocks and now moves into ninth place on the all-time career blocks list with 206. Schaub had a big day with nine kills and a game-high seven blocks while Chambers had six blocks. Denson-Dorman dished out 52 assists while junior Julie Pickard (Hillsborough, N.C.) and Isaac had a good match defensively with 18 and 17 digs, respectively.
The team finished with 13 total team blocks on the day.
The Huskies return to action on Friday, October 27 when they host South Florida at 7 p.m.
