Volleyball Downs DePaul, 3-0

STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 8) - The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team improved to 9-7 overall and 2-2 against BIG EAST competition with a 3-0 (30-28, 30-17, 30-22) victory over DePaul in Gampel Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.
The first game proved to be the closest of the three games, as DePaul (3-12, 0-4) came back to tie the score at 20 all. UConn had not trailed to that point in the game. The two teams then traded points back and forth and tied the score three more times before the Huskies put up a 28-27 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. For the game, senior Megan Crawley (Georgetown, Texas) had six kills and sophomore Julie Pickard (Hillsborough, N.C..) picked up nine digs.
The early moments of the second game proved to be close for both teams, as the score was tied 11 times before UConn opened up a 17-16 lead. The Huskies then went on a 13-1 run to close out the game. Crawley served seven consecutive points in that span, including three aces, and Pickard closed out the game by serving the final five points for the Huskies. Crawley also had five kills in the game while senior Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, Fla.) had 13 assists in the game and classmate Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, Md.) had six digs.
DePaul took the early lead in game three before UConn came back to tie the game at 11-11. The Huskies then took the lead on a kill by Crawley and never looked back, taking the game 30-22. Ashley had six kills in the game, Crawley added four and Pickard scooped up 11 digs.
For the match, Crawley led the Huskies with 15 kills. Ashey and junior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) each had eight kills each while sophomore Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) added six. Pickard had 24 digs on the match and Ashley picked up 11. In addition to her 15 kills, Crawley had four service aces, nine digs and three block assists.
DePaul was led by Caitlin Callaghan, who had seven kills. Denae Gibson also added six kills and Maureen Zigulich picked up 11 digs.
The Huskies are next in action on Sunday, Oct. 9 when they will host No. 10 Notre Dame in Gampel Pavilion. Match time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
