Volleyball Dominates Harvard, 3-0

STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 4) - The University of Connecticut volleyball team defeated Harvard, 3-0 (30-14, 30-19, 33-31) on Tuesday evening in Gampel Pavilion. It was the Huskies third-consecutive victory and improves the team's overall record to 8-7 on the season.
UConn (8-7, 1-2) dominated the first game from the beginning, taking a 4-1 lead to open the game, a lead they would not relinquish. Sophomore Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and senior Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, Md.) each had four kills in the first game to lead the Huskies.
The second game was tied eight times in the early moments, with Harvard (3-9, 0-2) taking the early lead. However, midway through the game, UConn put up a 15-13 lead. On the strength of senior Megan Crawley's (Georgetown, Texas) serve, UConn rattled off the next nine points of the game on the way to closing out the game on a 15-6 run. Chambers picked up five kills in the game and Crawley had four kills. She also had two service aces while serving those nine points.
The third game proved to be a test for both teams, as the they battled back and forth throughout for points. Harvard held a 26-21 lead near the close of the game, but the Huskies battled back, tying the score four times before the match was decided. In UConn's comeback, Chambers had two kills while freshman Sarah Singer (Waukesha, Wisc.) had three kills for the Huskies final three points of the match. For the game, Chambers had five kills while Singer notched eight. Senior Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, Fla.) also had six digs in the game.
On the match, Chambers and Singer led UConn with 14 kills and one solo block apiece. Chambers had a career-high .648 hitting percentage in the match while Singer had three service aces. Ashley added 10 kills while Crawley had nine kills, two service aces and six digs. Neelands had one kill in the match while picking up 44 assists and 14 digs as well as two service aces.
Yale was led by Laura Mahon, who had 13 kills. Jennifer Fountain also had seven kills while Mimi Hanley added six.
The Huskies are next in action on Saturday, Oct. 8 when they host DePaul in Gampel Pavilion. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m.
