STORRS, CT (June 28) - Holly Strauss, formerly the graduate assistant coach for the University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team, has been promoted to first assistant coach for the program as announced by seventh-year head coach Kelli Myers. Strauss, a 2003 graduate of the University of North Carolina, takes over the position previously filled by three-year assistant coach Mike Webster.
"I am extremely excited to have Holly on board full-time," says Myers. "She's done a great job over the past year and really compliments our staff. Her primary responsibility will be taking over as the recruiting coordinator, and Holly's proven success will be a great asset for us as the BIG EAST changes membership for the 2005 season, which will feature her first full recruiting class."
As a graduate assistant coach during the 2003-04 season, Strauss helped guide the team to a successful 20-win season. She now will fulfill the role of assistant coach just over a year after graduating from UNC, where at middle hitter, she helped lead the Tar Heels to three ACC titles, two regular-season ACC titles and their first Sweet Sixteen appearance to cap off a 35-2 record in her senior year. The Tar Heels compiled an impressive 115-22 record through her four years with the program, and Strauss currently stands atop the all-time career blocks list, and ranks second in block assists and sixth in hitting percentage.
Strauss’ coaching experience includes guiding the Triangle Volleyball Club 18’s to a regional title in the Spring of 2003.
Strauss is a native of Hamilton, Ontario, where she attended St. Mary’s High School. She played for six years with the Seekers Volleyball Club that was the Ontario Champion from 1994-1999, the National Bronze Medalist from 1996-1998, and the International Champion in 1996.
Strauss earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and journalism at UNC, and will fulfill her duties as assistant coach while completing a graduate degree in Sports Psychology.
