MIAMI, FL (March 14) -- The UConn women’s rowing team competed several times in Miami, Fla. over the week of March 5. It was UConn’s first time on the water since their winter training trip in January. Highlights of the week included a strong showing by the UConn Varsity and JV against Barry University and Boston College.
“I was happy to see that we were competitive with Boston College in our scrimmage pieces. They have fast crews, and to be their speed at this time of year is a good sign for us,” said head coach Jen Sanford-Wendry.
After some hard training during the week, UConn competed in the Hurricane Invitational Regatta. The UConn Varsity 8 defeated Barry but fell to Miami and Loyola Marymount. The JV8 had the most impressive showing with wins over Loyola Marymount and the Central Florida, but lost to Miami. The Novice 8 lost to Miami, Nova Southeastern, and the University of Central Florida.
“Even though our Novice 8 lost this weekend, they are showing great potential and with more water time I am confident that they will have a successful season,” said Coach Sanford-Wendry.
The Varsity four was defeated by Miami, and the Novice 4 was defeated by Nova Southeastern.
“It’s tough to race warmer climate schools this early because they have had more time in the water. Overall, I think our entire squad showed a lot of potential over the week practicing and racing," said Coach Sanford-Wendry. "I am looking forward to seeing where we take that potential.”
UConn faces Fairfield University at home on March 27 at 8:30 AM, and will race in the Yankee Cup at Rhode Island on March 28 at 2 PM against Rhode Island, UMass, and UNH.
