NORTH KINGSTON, RI (March 30) -- The University of Connecticut women’s rowing team won the points trophy on Sunday in a regatta against the University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island and University of New Hampshire. It was an exciting day of racing, as UConn won the points trophy with 29 points over second place UMass and UNH (tied) with 25 points, followed by URI with 21 points.
The UConn novice eight won their event, leading the team scoring with 10 points. The varsity eight and varsity four placed second, scoring seven points for the team, and the JV8 placed third scoring five points toward the overall total. The second novice eight also competed and placed first. That event was not scored.
This was the first year that the Yankee Cup was held, hosted by the University of Rhode Island. UConn head coach Jen Sanford-Wendry said, "This was a great day for our team. It was fun to be competing for points, as the whole team played an important role in the end results. Often the varsity eight overrides the other events, but not today. Winning the points trophy shows that we have some good depth on our team, and it was a great experience for both of our novice eights to win. Every UConn boat showed great promise today, and with more water time, we hope to avenge any losses we had today later in the season."
UConn races next Sunday against Rutgers in New Brunswick, NJ.
