STORRS, CONNECTICUT (September 6, 2002)— The University of Connecticut’s 2002-2003 men’s basketball schedule includes 27 regular season games, highlighted by a challenging 16-game regular season BIG EAST schedule, intersectional non-league road matchups against North Carolina, Oklahoma and Vanderbilt and an exhibition contest against the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters.
The Huskies will be featured on national television a total of ten times during the regular season, including eight appearances on ESPN/espn2 and two CBS televised contests. Local and regional television plans for the remaining games on the Husky schedule will be announced at a later date. All UConn games, home and away, will be broadcast live on the UConn/WTIC Radio Network with WTIC AM-1080 serving as the flagship station.
“We are very excited about the challenges which lie ahead during our 2002-2003 regular season,” said UConn head coach Jim Calhoun. “We have several demanding contests out of conference on the road and challenging opponents that will provide plenty of tests at home. Within the BIG EAST Conference, we expect to fight for another championship in what should be a very competitive race, hopefully improving throughout the regular season and positioning Connecticut Basketball for another run deep into national post-season play.”
Connecticut will play 16 regular season home games, nine in the Hartford Civic Center and seven in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in Storrs. In addition to the regular season home games, the Huskies will play two pre-season exhibition home games, one in Hartford and one in Storrs.
The 11-game road schedule for the season will be highlighted by non-conference match-ups at Vanderbilt (December 1), at Oklahoma (January 7) and at North Carolina (January 18). The conference road slate will feature a pair of games in new arenas, at Miami on January 20 and at Pittsburgh on March 2.
UConn’s 2002-2003 regular season schedule opens on Saturday, November 23 against Quinnipiac University. Prior to the regular season, UConn will play two exhibition games, against an opponent to be determined on November 4 at Gampel Pavilion and against the Harlem Globetrotters on November 16 at the Hartford Civic Center.
Another highlight of the non-conference schedule includes a pair of match-ups with former UConn assistant coaches. The Huskies will host former assistant coach and Husky letterwinner Karl Hobbs and the Colonials of George Washington on Monday, November 25. Connecticut also matches up with Howie Dickenman and the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut on Saturday, December 28.
