Boylan Earns Verizon Academic All-America Honors

STORRS, CT (June 13) – Michael Boylan (Doylestown, PA) of the University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey team was named to the 2002 CoSIDA Verizon Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Team as announced by Verizon and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Tuesday afternoon. Boylan was named to the CoSIDA Verizon Academic All-District I Men’s At-Large First Team on May 16, which placed on the ballot for national contention.
Boylan, earning third team accolades, joins former teammate Michael Goldkind, ‘01 (Silver Spring, MD) to become the second player in UConn hockey program history to earn Academic All-America honors.
Boylan, a defenseman, completed his four-year career at UConn having logged the most games played in hockey history (137 games). A strong presence from the blueline, Boylan scored a career 23 goals and 41 assists for 64 points, first among defensemen and fifth at UConn in Division I scoring history. This season, Boylan was named to the 2002 All-MAAC First Team after recording eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points, and was one of five selected as a UConn Club Outstanding Senior Scholar-Athlete. Boylan is a Finance major ending his four years at Connecticut with a 3.895 grade point average.
The Verizon Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-members of CoSIDA. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. Sports Information Directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to the district teams prior to being voted upon the national level.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Verizon Academic All-America program, which was founded by CoSIDA in 1952 to recognize collegiate student-athletes for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field. Over the past 50 years, the Verizon Academic All-America program has grown into one of the most recognized and prestigious collegiate scholar-athlete awards nationwide, honoring student-athletes from all NCAA championship sports.
