STORRS, CT (May 6, 2002)-- Clyde Vaughan, former standout at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named an assistant coach with the University of Connecticut basketball program, it was announced by head coach Jim Calhoun.
"We are very excited about Clyde joining our coaching staff," said Calhoun. "He is a proven recruiter and excellent coach who knows about the history of the BIG EAST Conference and what it takes to be a top performer on that stage. As a standout at the University of Pittsburgh, he was a tremendous scorer and tenacious rebounder and those attributes are evident in the way he works with players and the way that he approaches his job. He will be a great addition to our program."
Vaughan has spent the past three seasons (1999-00 through 2001-02) as an assistant coach at the University of South Florida. Vaughan previously spent seven seasons (1992-93 through 1998-99) at Long Beach State University, first as an assistant coach (‘92-’93 through ‘96-’97) and then as the associate head coach (‘97-’98 through ‘98-’99).
A 1984 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Vaughan earned a bachelor’s degree in communications. He led the Panthers in scoring and rebounding in his final three seasons at Pitt and still ranks as the No. 2 scorer in school history with 2,033 points. He is also No. 5 all-time at Pitt with 920 career rebounds. He was a Third Team All-BIG EAST selection in 1982-83 and a Second Team All-BIG EAST pick in 1983-84. As a junior in 1982-83, Vaughan led the BIG EAST Conference in scoring at 22.0 points per game in league contests. He still ranks in the Top 15 in BIG EAST Conference history with his career averages of 19.5 points and 8.5 rebounds.
After completing his career at Pittsburgh, Vaughan was a sixth round selection by the Indiana Pacers in the 1984 NBA Draft. Vaughan opted instead to play professional basketball in Europe, where he was a standout in England. He still ranks No. 3 on the all-time scoring average list, averaging 28.2 points per game. His 4,766 career points are No. 20 in league history and he is No. 10 in free throw shooting percentage at 83.2%. He averaged 7.9 rebounds per game and shot 57.9% from the floor, both among the career leaders in those categories. He was the English Player of the Year in 1989-90 and made 27 appearances for the English National Team.
Vaughan grew up in Mount Vernon, NY and attended New Rochelle High School, where he was a basketball standout. In September of 2000, he was inducted into the Westchester County Sports Hall of Fame and was a member of the Westchester County All-Century Basketball team, as selected by The Journal News.
