Several Huskies Compete At Penn Relays On Friday

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Select members of the University of Connecticut men’s track and field team were in action Friday at the 108th edition of the Penn Relays. The relay squads and freshman Ron Cook (Philadelphia, PA) highlighted the Husky performances on the day.
Competing in his hometown, Cook posted UConn’s best finish of the day, taking third in the Eastern Long Jump with a collegiate career best leap of 23’9”. Cook will also be in action tomorrow in the Eastern Triple Jump competition.
Cook was not the only Husky to place well in an individual event on Friday, as sophomore Joe DiCola (Courtland Manor, NY) tied for sixth-place in the Eastern Pole Vault with an effort of 15’3”.
In relay action, the distance medley team of senior Elliott Blount (Freeport, NY), junior Joe Mendel (Wayne, NJ), senior Gabe DeLeon (Bronx, NY) and senior Dan Wilson (West Haven, CT) ran to a seventh-place finish in the Championship of America with a time of 9:44.18. Both Blount and Wilson were part of UConn’s distance medley team in 2000, which captured the Championship of America title two years at the Penn Relays.
Also finishing in seventh-place overall in a Championship of America relay was UConn’s shuttle hurdles relay squad, notching a time of 59.87. The Huskies were third in their heat in the event.
In preliminary heats, both the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay squads advanced to secondary final action on Saturday, as the two squads will compete in the IC4A relay finals. The 4x100-meter relay team finished second in its heat with a time of 41.60 while the 4x200-meter relay squad crossed the finish-line first in its heat with a time of 1:26.73.
Other UConn competitors on Friday included sophomore Chris Mazza (Toms River, NJ) and junior Mark Jellison (Reading, MA). Mazza recorded no height in the College Pole Vault while Jellison registered no marks in the Eastern Long Jump.
Penn Relays action continues tomorrow. In addition, several members of the UConn men’s track and field team will be competing at the UConn Invitational tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex.
