JOSH MOONEY AN ALL-AMERICAN IN THE DECATHLON

EUGENE, OR – UConn junior Josh Mooney wrapped up his second day of competition in the decathlon at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Oregon's Hayward Field and earned All-American first team honors thanks to an eighth-place finish in the field.
Mooney finished with a total of 7,869 points over the 10 events and is an All-American for the second-straight season. Mooney's point total improves upon his 12th place finish last season when he posted 7,662 points.
After the first five events on Wednesday, Mooney sat in 18th place overall. He rocketed into the top-10 on day two thanks to a pair of second and third place finishes. Mooney opened Thursday with a second-place finish in the 110m hurdles, clocking in at 14.20 seconds.
He followed that up with a new personal best in the discus, finishing third with a toss of 45.00m. Mooney then set another new personal best in the pole vault, topping his previous best height set at last season's NCAA title meet. Mooney finished third, clearing the bar at 4.91m. He then went second in the javelin with a throw of 60.04m.
BYU's Ben Barton was the NCAA decathlon champion, finishing first with 8,169 points, just nine points in front of Kenneth Byrd of Louisville in second. Luuk Pelkmans from Illinois was third overall with 8,079 points.
UConn sophomore Maresa Hense will begin competing in the heptathlon on Friday afternoon.
