PROVIDENCE, RI – University of Connecticut baseball player Nick Tucci (Medford, MA) was named BIG EAST Co-Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. He shares the honor with Notre Dame’s Peter Ogilvie.
Tucci, a freshman, threw his second complete game of the season in Connecticut’s 5-1 win against St. John’s on Sunday, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out six and walking three. The rookie right-hander made his lone mistake of the afternoon in the sixth inning when he gave up a solo home run to Charlie Bilezikjian to start the frame. He then allowed only one hit the rest of the game, picking up his team-best third conference victory of the season.
The win improved Tucci's overall record to 3-2 on the season. He's made seven appearances with five starts and has an ERA of 4.47. The only UConn freshman to have made more than one start this season, Tucci has struck out 43 batters in 44.1 innings of work and has held opponents to a .259 batting average.
Tucci becomes the first pitcher to earn conference honors this season for the Huskies. The last UConn pitcher to earn the distinction was Chris DeBrisco last season on April 9. Junior Brett Burnham (South Windsor, CT) was the first and only other Connecticut player to receive conference honors this season, as he was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week on March 26.
UConn, which won two of three games against the Red Storm this weekend, currently sits in fifth place in the BIG EAST with a record of 9-7-0. The Huskiess, 19-16-0 overall on the season, will host Fairfield on Tuesday, April 23. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at J.O. Christian Field.
