Huskies Dominate Second Home Meet Of Outdoor Season

STORRS, CT -- Three facility records and one school record fell as the University of Connecticut men’s track and field team rolled to victory in its second home meet this season at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. UConn amassed 183 points while Brown was second with 52. Massachusetts placed third with 44 points.
Headlining a group of impressive performances was sophomore Chris Mazza (Toms River, NJ), who broke the school record in the pole vault with an effort of 16’6”. Mazza’s performance surpassed that of Jeff Farrington, who previously held the record with a vault of 16’5” in 1998.
Senior Dan Wilson (West Haven, CT) broke the facility record and posted another NCAA provisional qualifying effort en route to victory in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:44.67 while senior Adebo Oshodi (White Plains, NY) bested the facility record with a time of 10.60 in the 100-meter dash. In the second to last track event of the afternoon, sophomore Eric Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY) registered a facility record in the 5,000-meter run with 14:35.71.
Both junior Joe Mendel (Wayne, NJ ) and freshman Ron Cook (Philadelphia, PA) were double winners on the afternoon. Mendel ran to victories in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes with times of 21.43 and 47.08, respectively, while Cook won the long jump with a leap of 7.22 meters (23’8.25”) and the triple jump with an effort of 14.55 meters (47’9”).
Overall, Husky athletes won 17 of the 19 events at the meet. Other winners for UConn included: senior Elliott Blount (Freeport, NY) in the 800-meter run (1:52.48), junior Mark Jellison (Reading, MA) in the 110-meter hurdles (14.38), senior Gabe DeLeon (Bronx, NY) in the 400-meter hurdles (53.78), the 4x100-meter relay “A” team (41.28), the 4x400-meter relay “A” team (3:19.02), junior Mike Deibler (Monroe, NY) in the high jump (2.06 meters - 6’9”), junior Brian Hartley (Norwalk, CT) in the shot put (15.50 meters - 50’10.25”), sophomore John Barth (Wakefield, RI) in the hammer throw (57.70 meters - 198’4”) and sophomore Paul Pisano (Toms River, NJ) in the javelin (60.00 meters - 196’10”).
UConn returns to action this week at the Penn Relays, to be held April 25-27 in Philadelphia, PA. A group of Husky athletes will also be competing at the UConn Invitational home meet next Saturday, April 27, at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex.
