Huskies Fall to Quinnipiac

STORRS, CT (November 1) – Despite three late goals by the University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey team, the Huskies were defeated by Quinnipiac University, 7-4, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up on Friday evening at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs. Quinnipiac improved to 5-1-1 overall and remained undefeated in the conference at 3-0-1, while UConn dropped to 1-3-0 overall, 0-2-0 in the MAAC.
Dan Ennis opened the scoring for Quinnipiac at the 7:58 mark of the first period on a slap shot from the right point that sailed over the shoulder of UConn keeper Jason Carey (Oakdale, MN) banking in off the near post. With just under two-minutes left in the period, Ron D’Angelo (Massapequa, NY) drilled a shot that went into the net but was taken away when Matt Grew (Yarmouthport, MA) was called for slashing penalty before the goal. Aaron Ludwig put the Bobcats up 2-0 on a power play tally with 13-seconds remaining in the period on a scramble from in front of the goal.
Quinnipiac took the 3-0 lead one minute into the second stanza when Wade Winkler knocked in a rebounded shot that had initial hit the goal post. Connecticut put a goal on the board at the 8:04 mark of the period. Jon Ames (Baldwinsville, NY) slid the shot into the left slot on assists from Michael Hoffman (Scituate, MA) and Mark Murphy (Jamestown, RI). Quinnipiac countered notching three more goals from Matt Craig, Chris White and Ty Deinema to close the period with a 6-1 Bobcat lead.
Matt Owens (Framingham, MA) netted the Huskies second goal of the evening 4:28 into the third period as a Quinnipiac penalty had just completed. DJ Miller (Mount Lebanon, PA) assisted Owens on the goal. Matt Craig raised the score to 7-2 at the 11:36 mark during a power play opportunity. UConn took advantage of two Quinnipiac penalties late in the third period. Kurt Kamienski (Pittsfield, MA) scored with 1:58 remaining in regulation with help from D’Angelo and Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, MN). Owens raised the score to 7-4 forty-seconds later on another Hoffman, Murphy combination.
Jason Carey (Oakdale, MN) stopped 23 shots on goal, while Jamie Holden recorded 28 saves. Despite the loss, UConn out shot Quinnipiac, 32-30 with the 17-3 advantage in the third period.
UConn will travel to Fairfield on Saturday evening at the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport at 7:00 pm.
