HAMILTON, NY (October 19) – Ron D’Angelo (Massapequa, NY) netted two goals, including the game-winner to give the University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey team a 5-4 overtime victory over Colgate University at Starr Rink in Hamilton, NY on Saturday night. The win gave the Huskies their first victory of the season (1-2-0), while the Raiders remained winless at 0-3-0.
The win gives UConn its first program victory in its 43-year history over Colgate University, dating back to 1960-61, the program’s first year as a varsity sport. The win also eliminates Connecticut’s winless streak as a Division I program over an ECAC school.
Just 1:33 into the game, Colgate’s Kyle Doyle put the Raiders on the board. UConn then went on to take the 2-1 lead at the period’s end on two power play goals. Eric Nelson (Big Lake, MN) notched the unassisted tally at the 3:15 mark. Nelson then assisted a Kurt Kamienski (Pittsfield, MA) score with 5:36 left in the stanza, also on the power play.
Doyle evened the score with the game’s lone second period goal just before the seven-minute mark.
The teams swapped leads in the third period to send the game into overtime. D’Angelo netted UConn’s third power play score of the night at the 7:43 mark of the period on assists from Kamienski and Adam Rhein (Cottage Grove, MN). Colgate took the 4-3 lead on power play goals from Dmitry Yashin and Scooter Smith five minutes apart at the 13:26 and 18:05 mark, respectively. Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, MN) earned his first goal as a Husky with a 1:20 left in regulation to force the overtime period. Kamienski and D’Angelo assisted on the goal.
Scott Brown (Blaine, MN) and Kamienski setup the game-winner scored by D’Angelo at the 3:38 mark of the overtime period.
UConn’s Jason Carey (Oakdale, MN) captured his first win of the season stopping 39 shots on goal, while David Cann made 18 saves. Despite the loss, Colgate out shot UConn, 43-23.
Connecticut will take the next weekend off, and then play host to Quinnipiac on Friday, November 1 at 7:00 pm at the UConn Arena.
