Huskies Edged Out by Holy Cross, 3-2

STORRS, CT (October 13) – The University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey team was edged out by the College of the Holy Cross, 3-2, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up at the UConn Ice Arena on Sunday night. The Huskies, in their first regular season home game, dropped to 0-2-0 overall, 0-1-0 in the MAAC, while Holy Cross earned it first win of the season, improving to 1-1-0 overall, 1-1-0 in the league.
Holy Cross dominated the later part of the first period, out shooting UConn, 10-4. Brandon Doria notched the Crusaders goal on the power play at the 6:48 mark of the period. RJ Irving assisted on the score.
UConn tied the game three minutes into the second period when DJ Miller (Mount Lebanon, PA) flicked in a rebounded shot on assists from Ron D’Angelo (Massapequa, NY) and Mark Murphy (Jamestown, RI). At the 10:58 mark of the period, Blair Bartlett put the Crusaders on top again for the 2-1 lead. Then, with 2:32 remaining in the stanza, Jon Ames (Bladwinsville, NY) evened the score during a power play opportunity. Michael Hoffman (Scituate, MA) and Matt Owens (Framingham, MA) assisted on the goal. UConn picked the play during the period, taking the 12-9 advantage in shots on goal.
Taking the scoring advantage for the third time in the game, Pierre Frenette put the Crusaders out on top at the 3:27 mark of the last period. In the end, UConn out shot Holy Cross, 30-28.
Jason Carey (Oakdale, MN) earned his first start of the season recording 25 saves, while Matt Norton stopped 28 for Holy Cross.
Connecticut will travel to Colgate on Saturday, October 19 for a game slated to start at 7:00 pm.
