UConn To Select Men's Basketball All-Century Team
10/28/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
UConn mens basketball began as a varsity program in November of 1901 and the 2000-2001 season will complete 100 years of Husky basketball.
During the past 100 years, UConn basketball has become an important part of the fabric of an entire state. From Hawley Armory (1915-1947), to the Hanger (1948-1954), to the Field House (1954-1990), to the Hartford Civic Center (1976+), to the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion (1990+), Husky basketball has dominated the winter sports scene for UConn fans.
During the past 99 years, Connecticut has won both a NCAA Championship (1999) and a NIT Championship (1988). UConn has won 18 Yankee Conference Championships, a pair of ECAC New England Championships, and 10 BIG EAST Conference Championships. The Huskies have played in the NCAA Championship Tournament 22 times while participating in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) 10 times.
To celebrate 100 years of Husky Hoops, a 20-member All- Century UConn Mens Basketball Team will be announced during the 2000-2001 college basketball season.
A total of 78 former UConn basketball stars are listed on the official All-Century Team ballot. Those names were selected by a committee comprised of long-time followers of the Connecticut mens basketball program. In addition to the 78 Husky stars listed on the ballot, fans can cast write-in votes for other UConn players.
UConn basketball fans have the opportunity to participate in the selection process by voting for their favorite Husky players. Printed ballots will be available at Citgo locations in the state as well as at Bobs Stores throughout Connecticut.
In addition, fans can cast their ballots on-line by going to the UConn Athletics web site (www.uconnhuskies.com) and clicking on the UConn Basketball All-Century Team logo.
Fans must enter their e-mail address to cast their 20-man ballot and only one vote per e-mail address will be accepted.
Fans participating in both the printed ballot process and the on- line voting process will be eligible for grand prizes (two winners for printed ballot voters, two winners for on-line ballot voters). Each of the four winners will receive two tickets to the UConn Mens Basketball All-Century Team Celebration Dinner, scheduled for Sunday, February 25, 2001. In addition, each of the four prize winners will receive two tickets to the UConn- Notre Dame mens basketball game on Monday, February 26, 2001 at the Hartford Civic Center. The UConn All-Century Team will be recognized during halftime ceremonies.
Fans voting, both with printed ballots and on-line, must include their name and address to be entered for the random prize drawings. Any ballots selecting more than 20 players will not be valid.
Voting for the UConn Basketball All-Century Team ends December 12, 2000.
