Morgantown, WV (Oct. 22) - For the first time on the 2000 season, the University of Connecticut volleyball team came away with a win following a match that went to five games as it defeated West Virginia (16- 14, 8-15, 15-12, 12-15, 15-13). The match, which lasted nearly two and a half hours, saw the Huskies collect 82 kills, 100 digs and 20 blocks. All of which were season highs for the team.
Stephanie Schindel (Sr., OH, Diamond Bar, CA) continued her trend of earning a double-double as she notched her fourth consecutive and 11th on the year with a team leading 20 kills along with 21 digs. Both totals mark her second best effort in their respective categories for Schindel in 2000. Raftyn Birath (Fr., MH/OH, Marshall, MN) turned in her first career double-double with 19 kills and 26 digs. Birath's kills erased her previous career high of10, while her 26 digs are the most of any UConn player this season. Also posting double-doubles, were Christine Lambert (So., MH, Lancaster, CA) and Janice Dykema (So., MH, Kalamazoo, MI).
Lambert's 16 kills were a career high, as were Dykema's 10 digs. Lambert also had 12 blocks on the afternoon, notable, as it leads the team in the category this year and is also one off the school record owned by Chanice Harris, who had 13 on two occasions, both against West Virginia. Maria Shaker (Jr., S, Fairview Park, OH), also helped the offensive effort, as she guided the team with 64 assists to tie Julie Erbez (64, Maryland, 10/14/00) for the most of any Husky on the year.
After spending the majority of the month of October on the road as part of four straight road games, UConn returns to Gampel Pavilion on Oct. 25, as they host Yale at 7:30 p.m. When facing the Bulldogs, series history favors the Huskies, 12-2. Despite the teams meeting on 14 occasions in the 25-year history of the Connecticut program, the two have only squared off once during the last six seasons. The meeting came a year ago on Oct. 6, with UConn downing Yale, 3-0, in New Haven, CT.
