UConn Caps Tournament with Win Over Rhode Island

STORRS, Conn. - UConn volleyball defeated Rhode Island, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at the UConn Volleyball Center to close out the "For the White & Blue" Tournament.
After dropping a tightly contested first set, the Huskies responded by winning three straight sets. UConn hit .275 as a team with 60 kills and 12 service aces, and nine blocks.
The Huskies fell behind 5-0 in the first set, then won seven of eight rallies from 3-7 to move in front 10-8, with Einarsdottir contributing two kills and a service ace during the push. After Rhode Island later led 24-22, the Huskies tied the set on an Einarsdottir kill from Isabella Sohl and went ahead 25-24 on an attack error. Rhode Island answered with the final three points to take the set 27-25.
In the second set, the Huskies delivered a six-point surge from 9-8 to 15-8, starting with a Borowy kill and continuing through Grace Maria's serve. Earlier, Einarsdottir served the Huskies to the first six points of the set, including a kill, a team service ace and two block-assisted points. The Huskies closed the set at 25-17 on kills by Einarsdottir and Borowy.
After Rhode Island's opening point in the third set, the Huskies answered with a 6-0 run, with Borowy recording three kills and teaming with Grayson for a block before Maja Daca added an ace. Borowy finished with eight kills in the set, and the Huskies closed out a 25-18 set win on a Rhode Island attack error.
In the fourth set, the Huskies erased a 16-13 deficit with six straight points, moving in front 19-16. Einarsdottir had three kills in that response, and Maggie Carley served the final five points of the run, including an ace, before Grayson added a kill. The Huskies held off Rhode Island from there and closed the set 25-20, with Hazuna Akishige serving an ace during the final two-point finish.
Einarsdottir led the Huskies with 19 kills, three aces and 10 digs, while Borowy added 14 kills and two blocks. Grayson finished with 11 kills and seven blocks, and Daca recorded 10 kills and 10 digs. Audrey Jensen paced UConn with 26 assists and added two blocks, while Isabella Sohl contributed 16 assists. Akishige recorded 12 digs and four assists, while Carley and Maria each added two aces.
UP NEXT: UConn opens BIG EAST play at home, welcoming Marquette on Sept. 25 and DePaul on Sept. 26.
