Huskies Open Season at The Doc Gimmler at Bethpage

STORRS, CT – The UConn golf team will kick-off their season this weekend with the first of six tournaments this fall as they tackle The Doc Gimmler Red & Black at Bethpage State Park Red Course.
The event, hosted by fellow BIG EAST member St. John's will feature three rounds, 54-holes, on Saturday and Sunday, September 12-13. The Huskies are part of a 14-team field that features the host Red Story along with Boston College, Bryant, Columbia, Hofstra, Iona, Lafayette, Lehigh, LIU, Providence, Rhode Island, Towson, and Yale. UConn last played this event to start the 2024-25 season and finished eighth in a 12-team field.
Play will get underway on Saturday morning at the famed par 70, 7,092 yard course in Farmingdale, NY with 36 holes on day one and an 18-hole final round on Sunday. Live scoring is available Scoreboard by Clippd.
Head coach Dave Pezzino, in his 20th season at the helm, has a young group of Huskies this season. The lineup to open the season will feature sophomore Brennan Korn (Scottsdale, AZ), juniors Kai-Jun Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) and Caden Blanchette (Manchester, PA), freshman Yves Koller (Zurich, Switzerland) and fifth-year transfer Justin Burroughs (Pensacola, FL). Sophomore Matthew Oliveira (Dartmouth, MA) will play as an individual.
Korn played in nine of 12 events last fall and sported a 74.9 average over 27 rounds. He was at par of better in six of those rounds and had his best finish at the Golfweek Invitational (23rd). Blanchette played 30 rounds over 10 events last season as a sophomore, sporting a 73.6 average. He notched his first career top-10 finish with a tie for eight at the Metropolis Intercollegiate.
Huang also played in 10 events last year as a first-year player for the Huskies after transferring in. He had a 72.5 average over 30 rounds had 11 rounds at par or better. He posted a second-place finish at the Golfweek Invitational, his best outing of the season.
The UConn roster this season features just one senior in Burroughs from Clemson. He missed last season for the Tigers with injury but during his career at Clemson played in 15 tournaments.
Following this weekend's season-opening event, the Huskies will head to the U.S. Naval Academy next for The Goat on September 19-20.
