Huskies Sweep Doubleheader, Secure Series Win Over Villanova

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team defeated the Villanova Wildcats in both games of the doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. The Huskies took game one, 5-3. UConn secured the series win with a 9-1 run-rule win in five innings in game two.
Game One
Freshman Caprice Bohmer made her 15th start of the season in game one for the Huskies. Bohmer went 4.0 innings giving up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
UConn jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Sophomore Cat Petteys continued her hot hitting at the plate, knocking in Kaitlyn Kibling with a double to left field to make it 1-0. Senior Haley Coupal drove in Petteys with a sacrifice fly to left field. Junior Kaitlyn Breslin capped off the strong inning with her sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, extending the Huskies lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Petteys pushed UConn's lead to 5-0 with her team-leading 11th home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center field, giving her homers in consecutive games.
Villanova scored a run in the 4th inning and two runs in the 5th inning to trim into the Huskies lead, 5-3.
Graduate Jessica Walter came on in relief for Bohmer during the 5th inning, making her 24th appearance of the season.Walter closed out the win in the circle, earning her fourth save of the season, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. She retired eight of the nine batters she faced.

Game Two
Jessica Walter got the start in game two for the Huskies, making her 12th start of the season. Walter tossed 1.0 scoreless inning giving up just one hit.
Villanova opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd inning with a run to make it 1-0.
Redshirt-junior Sydnee Koosh came on in relief for Walter in the 2nd inning, making her 14th appearance this season. Koosh went on to pitch the rest of the game in the circle for the Huskies, going 4.0 innings, giving up one run on just three hits, adding a pair of strikeouts.
UConn took the lead for good in the bottom of the 3rd inning on back-to-back home runs. Senior Savannah Ring hit her second homer of the season, a two-run shot to left center field, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead. The next batter, Cat Petteys put one over the left field fence, hitting a homer in her third consecutive game, marking her 12th home run of the season to make it 3-1.
UConn's offense exploded for six runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, securing the run-rule victory. Haley Coupal started the rally with a single to right field, scoring Ring. Later in the inning, the Huskies loaded the bases for true freshman Emma Willers who delivered a double to right center field, scoring Coupal and Kaitlyn Breslin. Ava Calciano and Willers came home to score on a wild pitch and a throwing error by the Wildcats to extend the lead to 8-1. Junior Caylee De Meo secured the win for the Huskies with her third home run of the season, a solo shot to center field, giving UConn their fifth win in a row.
