Huskies Rally Late to Sweep Butler

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The UConn softball team rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the 7th inning to beat the Butler Bulldogs, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Butler Softball Field. The Huskies secured their third straight series sweep and their tenth consecutive win, improving to 12-3 in BIG EAST play and 20-22 overall this season.
Graduate Jessica Walter made her 13th start of the season in the series finale for the Huskies. Walter pitched 3.1 innings giving up one run on three hits, adding three strikeouts.
Butler opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning with a run to make it 1-0.
Walter settled in after the 1st inning, working two straight one-two-three innings in the 2nd and 3rd innings.
Freshman Caprice Bohmer came on in relief for Walter in the 4th inning, making her 27th appearance of the season. Bohmer tossed 3.2 scoreless innings in relief, keeping the Huskies within striking distance.
Down to their final strike in the top of the 7th inning, senior captain Kaitlyn Kibling delivered a clutch triple in the right center field gap, scoring the tying run, Heidi Barber all the way from first base, knotting the score at 1-1. Kibling scored the game-winning run on a ball put in play by Savannah Ring that was mishandled by the Bulldogs defense, giving UConn their first lead of the game, 2-1.
Bohmer locked down the first two outs of the bottom of the 7th, before being relieved by Walter who secured the final out, earning her eighth save of the season.
News and Notes
- Kaitlyn Kibling has reached base safely in ten consecutive games. She hit her team-leading third triple of the season.
- Savannah Ring had her 14-game hit streak snapped.
- The Huskies pitching staff has held teams to three runs or less in seven of their last eight games.
- UConn's defense turned a season high two double plays. They did not commit an error for the 18th time this season.
