Huskies Sweep Doubleheader with New Haven

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team took both games of the doubleheader with the New Haven Chargers on Tuesday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. The Huskies powered their way past New Haven with a 17-0 victory in a five-inning run rule in game one. UConn's offense kept their foot on the gas in game two, defeating the Chargers, 15-8.
Game One
Freshman Caprice Bohmer was outstanding for the Huskies in her 12th start this season for the Huskies. Bohmer went the distance in the circle (5.0 innings), only giving up one hit to the Chargers offense while adding seven strikeouts, securing her first career shutout.
UConn jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the 1st inning, scoring four runs on three hits. Sophomore Cat Petteys plated the Huskies first run with a single to center field, scoring Kaitlyn Kibling. The next batter, junior Kaitlyn Breslin delivered a double to center field, scoring Haley Coupal. Freshman Emma Willers continued the hit-parade with a two-run single up the middle, scoring Petteys and Breslin, extending UConn's lead to 4-0.
The Huskies offense scored their most runs in an inning this season, sending 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the 3rd, pushing across eight runs to balloon the lead to 12-0. Junior Caylee De Meo got the rally started with a double to left field, scoring Petteys. Willers added two more runs with a double to right center field, scoring De Meo and Breslin,giving Willers a career high four RBI. Later in the inning, Kibling hit her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot to center field, making it 9-0. UConn capped off the big inning with back-to-back triples, the first coming off the bat of Petteys, scoring Savannah Ring and Coupal. Breslin knocked in Petteys with her first career triple, increasing the Huskies advantage to 12.
The Huskies continued to put pressure on the Chargers pitching in the bottom of the 4th inning, sending all nine to the plate. The bottom of the order all worked walks to load the bases for the top of the UConn lineup. Kibling worked the fifth walk in a row, forcing in pinch runner, Bella Cefola from third base. Ring followed Kibling with a single to left field, scoring pinch runner Isabella Lundquist and Ava Calciano to make it 15-0. Petteys knocked in her fourth RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Kibling. Breslin drove in Ring with a sacrifice fly to center field, giving her three RBI in the game, extending UConn's lead to 17-0.

Game Two
Sophomore Amber Bretton earned her second start of the season in game two. Bretton went 2.0 innings giving up three earned runs on four hits, adding a career high four strikeouts.
UConn's offense carried over their scorching hot hitting from game one into game two as the Huskies opened the scoring once again in the bottom of the 1st inning with three runs. Cat Petteys got the two-out rally started with her second triple in consecutive games, scoring Haley Coupal. Petteys later scored on a fielding error by New Haven. Caylee De Meo kept the rally going with a double to left field, scoring Kaitlyn Breslin, giving the Huskies a 3-0 advantage.
New Haven battled back in the top of the 2nd inning, scoring five runs to take their first lead at 5-3.
UConn's offense responded right away with four runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, regaining the lead, 7-5. Freshman Ava Calciano hit her first career home run, a solo shot to right field, making it 5-4. Later in the inning Coupal tied the game with a triple to right center field, scoring Kaitlyn Kibling. The next batter, Petteys hit her ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot to center field, giving the Huskies the lead for good.
Sophomore Alexandra Bacher came on in relief for Bretton in the 3rd inning, making her 12th appearance this season. Bacher tossed 3.0 innings for the Huskies giving up a run on two hits with a strikeout.
UConn extended its lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning with three runs on four hits. Kibling drove in a pair of RBI with a triple to left field, scoring De Meo and Emma Willers. Savannah Ring knocked in Kibling with a single to left field, pushing the UConn lead to 10-5.
New Haven got a run back in the top of the 4th inning to make it 10-6.
In the bottom of the 5th inning, Willers hit her second home run of the season, a solo shot to right field, making it a five-run lead at 11-6.
New Haven continued to battle, plating a pair of runs in the top of the 6th inning to narrow the UConn lead to 11-8.
Sophomore Stella Kiemele came on in relief for Bacher in the 6th inning, making her seventh appearance of the season. Kiemele only faced four batters before being relieved by Caprice Bohmer, making her 19th appearance this season. Bohmer closed out the final 2.0 innings for the Huskies in the circle, keeping the Chargers scoreless.
Once again, the Huskies had an answer for the Chargers, as UConn scored four runs off a pair of home runs in the bottom of the 6th inning, giving the Huskies breathing room at 15-8. Breslin hit the first homer of the inning, a two-run shot to left field, her fifth of the season. Willers capped off a career day at the plate with her second home run of the game, a two-run towering shot off the top of the Burrill Family Field scoreboard. This is the first multi-homer game for Willers.
