Huskies Split on Day Two of Liberty Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. -Â The UConn softball team defeated the Liberty Flames, 7-1 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at the Liberty Invitational. The Huskies fell to Radford in game two, 5-2.Â
Game One
Freshman Caprice Bohmer (Ashburn, Va.) started in the circle in game one, making her 8th start of the season. Bohmer went 3.1 innings giving up one run on four hits, adding a pair of strikeouts.Â
Liberty opened the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd inning on a sacrifice fly, giving the Flames a 1-0 lead.Â
UConn quickly responded in the top of the 4th as sophomore catcher Heidi Barber (Lino Lakes, Minn.) scored what would prove to be the game-winning run on a ground-rule double to left center, scoring pinch runner Bella Cefola (Flanders, N.J.) and Ava Calciano (Lewes, Del.), giving the Huskies the lead for good, 2-1.Â
Graduate Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) came on in relief for Bohmer during the bottom 4th inning, making her 12thappearance of the season for the Huskies. Walter was dominant out of the pen, retiring 11 of the 12 batters she faced, helping secure the win for UConn. She only gave up one hit, closing out the game in the circle.  Â
UConn extended their lead to 5-1 in the 5th inning. Calciano brought in two runs, reaching on a fielder's choice. UConn's starter Bohmer remained in the Huskies batting order and delivered her first career RBI with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Caylee De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) from third base.Â
The Huskies offense continued to tack onto the lead in the 6th inning, as junior outfielder Kaitlyn Breslin (Hopkinton, Mass.) drove in two more runs with a double to right center, scoring Haley Coupal (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Savannah Ring (Wyckoff, N.J.), extending the UConn lead to 7-1.Â

- Savannah Ring recorded her first three-hit game this season. She has hits in her last four consecutive games.Â
- Haley Coupal recorded her third multi-hit game this season.Â

- Heidi Barber recorded her first career multi-RBI game. She has driven in an RBI in her last three straight games.Â

- UConn's defense did not commit an error, their fifth errorless game this season.Â
Game Two
Redshirt-junior Sydnee Koosh (Canton, Ohio) got the nod in game two, making her third start of the season in the circle. Koosh pitched all 6.0 innings for the Huskies, giving up five runs on eight hits, adding two strikeouts.Â
Kaitlyn Breslin opened the game's scoring in the top of the 3rd inning with a two-run home run to center field, her team-leading fourth homer of the season, giving UConn a 2-0 lead.Â
Radford responded with four runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning, putting the Highlanders in front, 4-2.
Radford added a run to their lead in the 5th inning, extending the deficit to 5-2.Â
UConn's offense continued to battle but could not scratch across more runs against Radford's starting pitcher, who pitched a complete game for the Highlanders.Â

- Savannah Ring has recorded a hit in five straight games.Â
- Kaitlyn Breslin recorded back-to-back multi-hit games, giving her five this season. She also posted consecutive multi-RBI games and has hit three home runs in her last four games.Â
