WILMINGTON, N.C. - The UConn baseball team (4-6) lost in 12-innings against UNCW (6-5) on Saturday evening at Brooks Field.Â
The game featured a pitcher's duel between LHP Cayden Suchy and Seahawk's RHP Cooper Allen.
Suchy posted a career-high 12 strikeouts in 7.0 shutout innings of work. The 12 strikeouts is the most since Ian Cooke punched out 14 against St. John's on April 12, 2024.Â
Allen pitched 8.0 innings with 10 strikeouts and allowed one run on three hits. Chris Cancel delivered his first career hit, an RBI single, against Allen in the fifth to give UConn a 1-0 advantage.Â
The game remained the same until the bottom of the eight. RHP Paxton Myers entered for the Huskies and the first batter, Mason Hughes chopped a ball over the mound for an infield hit. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, Hughes scored on a game-tying RBI double from Trevor Lucas.Â
Meyers induced a foul out to first and strikeouts to close the frame and keep it tied 1-1. The Huskies looked to retake the lead in the ninth with runners at first and third and two outs but a strikeout ended the threat. Meyers and the UNCW bullpen traded zeroes until the bottom of the 12th. A lead off double followed by a hit by pitch placed runners at first and second with no outs. Brady Thompson laid down a sacrifice bunt to third and Maddix Dalena's throw to first base went down the right field line to allow the winning run to score.Â
The Huskies and Seahawks will play a rubber game tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.Â
