SCOTTSDALE, AZ - The UConn baseball team (0-2) lost an eighth inning lead to Kansas State (2-0), 7-3, on Saturday night at Scottsdale Stadium.

The Huskies carried a 3-2 advantage into the bottom of the eighth, but a hit by pitch, passed ball and throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt set up the Wildcats in the frame.

With the game tied, 3-3, a two-run triple followed by an RBI single and double capped the four-run frame.

UConn starting pitcher Cayden Suchy was superb in his 2026 debut, pitching six solid innings that featured two runs allowed, just one walk and nine strikeouts.

UConn gave him a lead in the second inning after a lead off walk to Maddix Dalena and double from Nater Wachter placed runners at second and third and no outs. Gabriel Tirado tied the game with a sac fly to center and the Huskies took their first lead of the night on a wild pitch that plated Wachter.

The Huskies added on in the third with Evan Menzel leading off the frame with a double and quickly scored on an RBI single to right field from Tyler MInick.

UConn had an opportunity to break the game open with a 3-1 lead and the bases loaded and one out in the fifth. But a strikeout and pop out ended the threat and kept the Wildcats within striking distance.

Next up, the Huskies close the MLB Desert Invitational with a 8 pm ET game on Sunday against Air Force at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.
