No. 5 UConn Holds Strong Late to Defeat Maine

ORONO, Maine – No. 5 UConn women's hockey defeated the Maine Black Bears, 2-1 on Friday evening at Alfond Arena. The Huskies pick up their fourth straight victory moving to 9-1-1 in Hockey East play and 16-3-2 overall this season.
UConn netminder Tia Chan was outstanding throughout, turning aside 34 shots to backstop the win. The effort marked Chan's third consecutive game with 30+ saves, giving her 11 in total this season.
The first period began with Maine winning the initial draw. Chan made several key saves for the Huskies, notably stopping an early attempt just 18 seconds in. With just over three minutes left to go in the period, UConn's Megan Woodworth scored the game's opening goal, marking her eighth goal of the season. UConn took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission with shots favoring the Huskies in the first period, 11-9.
UConn struck quickly at the start of the second period, as Brooke Campbell found the back of the net off a great pass from Woodworth, extending the lead to 2-0 just 46 seconds into the period. Despite UConn's power play opportunity midway through the period, the Black Bears scored shorthanded, reducing their deficit to 2-1. UConn maintained their advantage through several saves by Chan and blocked shots, closing the period with a one-goal lead. Shots were in favor of Maine in the second period, 12-10.
UConn maintained their narrow lead throughout a tense third period against Maine, ultimately securing a 2-1 victory. Maine applied pressure with multiple attempts, but Chan was pivotal in preserving the lead, making 14 saves in the final period. Despite Maine pulling their goalie for an extra attacker, UConn's defense withstood the late Black Bear surge to close out the victory.
The Huskies were outshot 35–28 by Maine but secured a narrow victory by capitalizing on key opportunities. Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play, with UConn effectively killing off all penalties. UConn held a significant edge in faceoffs, winning 31 to Maine's 21, and blocked 27 shots to withstand sustained pressure.
