PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 4 UConn men's basketball team (14-1, 4-0 BIG EAST) rides a 10-game winning streak across state lines and heads to Providence (8-6, 2-1 BIG EAST) for a midweek showdown with the Friars. Tip-off from the Amica Mutual Pavilion on Wednesday night is set for 7 p.m. and will air on Peacock/NBCSN with John Fanta, Donny Marshall and Caroline Pineda on the call.
Connecticut is off to a perfect 4-0 start in BIG EAST play and is 3-0 in true road games this season, 6-0 in total in games away from home. Providence holds a 6-1 record at home and is coming off a win at Madison Square Garden over St. John's on Saturday. UConn is 51-31 all-time against its New England neighbor in a series that dates back to 1928. The Huskies have won the last six against the Friars, sweeping the regular season series in each of the last two campaigns.
UConn was last in action on Sunday with a 73-57 victory over Marquette in Storrs. Solo Ball led three Huskies in double-figures with 17 points and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds. Silas Demary Jr. scored 14 points and was a perfect 3-of-3 from 3-point range, while Tarris Reed Jr. narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. The Huskies never trailed and built a 20-point lead midway through the second half despite a cold shooting night from outside. UConn held Marquette to 32.3 percent shooting from the field and was +12 on the glass to win its sixth-straight vs. MU.
Ball leads Connecticut in scoring this season with 15.6 points per game, followed by Reed Jr. with 13.9 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds a night. Alex Karaban averages 13.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists while holding a 50.0/41.8/88.0 shooting line. Demary Jr. leads the BIG EAST with 5.7 assists per game, while five-star freshman Braylon Mullins continues to work back from an early injury and is averaging 9.9 points and 3.6 rebounds per game on 45.5 percent shooting.
The Huskies boast one of the nation's premiere defenses, ranking No. 2 in Kenpom defensive efficiency. UConn is fifth nationally in scoring defense at 61.2 ppg, second in effective field goal percentage against (41.6 percent) and 10th in blocks per game (5.9). The defensive turnaround has been stark, as UConn finished No. 75 in defensive efficiency a year ago and was in the 100s for much of the season.
Providence hosts UConn with an 8-6 overall record along with a 1-2 mark in BIG EAST play after Saturday's win in Manhattan. PC scores 88.9 points per game, tops in the conference.
