STORRS – The No. 4 UConn men's basketball team (14-1, 4-0 BIG EAST) never trailed in a 73-57 win over Marquette (5-10, 0-4 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion. The win was UConn's 10th straight victory, marking its fourth double-digit winning streak in the past four seasons. UConn's 14-1 start matches the best 15-game open to a season in the Dan Hurley era.
Solo Ball led all players and three Huskies in double-figures with 17 points, snaring a season-high eight rebounds and adding a steal and a block. Silas Demary Jr. battled through foul trouble to score 14 points in 21 minutes, while Tarris Reed Jr. narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. The Huskies held Marquette below 33 percent from the floor and finished +12 on the glass in the win.
How it Happened
A Reed Jr. bucket inside broke the ice as the two sides traded early jabs. The Huskies opened up their largest lead of the early going at 16-8 with a Jaylin Stewart feed to Eric Reibe on the block at 11:55. Later in the frame back-to-back jams from Stewart and Alex Karaban put the Huskies ahead, 24-15, before a timeout at 7:46.
At 4:18 of the first Reed Jr. rejected a shot on one end that led to a pull-up transition three splashed by Demary Jr. that gave UConn its largest lead at 31-20 before the final media stoppage of the opening stanza. The Golden Eagles pulled as close as five late in the frame, before a Reed Jr. slam gave UConn a 37-29 halftime advantage.
The Huskies opened the second half with a 7-2 run, going up 44-31 via a Ball 3-pointer at 16:57. After another 8-0 run it was an overall 15-4 sprint to start the second half that put the Huskies up 52-33 at 13:28, good for their largest lead of the day.
Connecticut went ahead by 20 for the first time with a Stewart slam at 8:12 that put the Huskies up 58-38. That effectively put the game on ice, as MU could not close any further than 19 until a pair of late 3-pointers in the final minute.
