Volleyball Begins BIG EAST Play Against DePaul and Marquette

STORRS, Conn.—UConn volleyball begins BIG EAST play this weekend, hitting the road to take on conference foes DePaul and Marquette.
Scouting the Huskies (11-1)
UConn finished preseason play with an 11-1 record. After a defeat against Yale, the team bounced back with five straight wins and now carries positive momentum into conference play. Dating back to last season, UConn has won 25 of 26 matches outside of BIG EAST play. The Huskies did not drop a set in last weekend's UConn Classic. They swept Brown, Marist, and Sacred Heart to remain unblemished at the UConn Volleyball Center.
Emma Werkmeister (Victor, N.Y.) was named MVP of the UConn Classic Tournament. She averaged 3.22 kills, 2.00 digs, and 0.89 aces per set, leading the Huskies to a perfect weekend. Werkmeister leads the Huskies with 159 kills and 27 aces on the season. Audrey Rome (Sandwich, Ill.) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. She anchored the UConn defense with 15 blocks on the weekend. Werkmeister, Rome, and Grace Maria (Arlington, Va.) were selected to the all-tournament team. Maria averaged 2.33 kills and 1.22 digs per set in the tournament.
Opposition Research
UConn will begin conference play against the DePaul Blue Demons in Chicago on Friday night at 8:00 pm. DePaul was the only team to beat the Huskies twice last season, handing UConn its only home loss of 2024 on November 15th. UConn leads the all-time series 14-5. The Blue Demons have won the last four meetings.
DePaul enters BIG EAST play with a 7-4 record. They went 1-1 in the Chicago Cup last weekend. DePaul's freshmen have starred in preseason play. Morgan Stewart leads the team with 138 kills (3.29 kills per set). Eva Hurrie anchors the Blue Demon defense and averages 5.11 digs per set. Hurrie earned Freshman of the Week Honors on September 15th. DePaul ranks second in the BIG EAST with 12.38 assists per set. Amanda Saegar leads with 7.88 assists per set.
The Huskies will travel north on Saturday night to take on the Marquette Golden Eagles at 7:00 pm. Marquette enters the weekend with a 6-4 record. Their season is highlighted by a straight-set victory over nationally ranked Florida last Friday. Marquette swept UConn in their only matchup, taking down the Huskies in straight sets in the conference opener for both teams. The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series 14-3 and have won the last 11 meetings.
Natalie Ring leads Marquette with a team-high 179 kills, pacing the conference with 4.71 kills per set. Isabela Haggard, the BIG EAST Setter of the Week, tallied 34 assists against Florida and contributed 38 assists and 12 digs against No. 12 Minnesota. Last season, Marquette finished 25-9, advancing to the regional semifinal after victories over Florida Gulf Coast and Utah before falling to eventual champion Penn State.
