Huskies Fall to no.9 Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. — The UConn women's field hockey team fell to no.9 Princeton Sunday afternoon by a final of 5-0.
The opening quarter saw early pressure from Princeton, with Beth Yeager putting them on the board at 4:41 with a goal assisted by Saylor Milone. The Huskies' Julia Bressler responded soon after with a shot at 5:14, but it was saved by Olivia Caponiti. Princeton extended their lead to 2-0 when Izzy Morgan scored at 11:54, assisted by Anna Faulstich. Despite a strong defensive effort, UConn was unable to find the back of the net in the first quarter.
The second quarter commenced with a strategic defensive play as Princeton's Molly Nye received a green card at 17:36, giving the Huskies a numerical advantage early on. UConn's offensive efforts were highlighted by Violeta Francese and Milaw Clause, who both tested Caponiti with shots at 22:10 and 22:17, respectively. The quarter concluded with a flurry of activity from UConn, as Fien Hollander executed consecutive penalty corners between 29:27 and 29:51, leading to multiple shot attempts by Abby Davidson and Lene Bujes, though they did not find the back of the net. On the defensive side, UConn's goalkeeper Natalie McKenna made crucial saves against shots from Yeager and Milone. The quarter ended scoreless, with the Huskies maintaining pressure through persistent offensive efforts.
Princeton extended its lead in the third quarter with two goals, securing a 4-0 advantage against UConn. Ottilie Sykes scored her second goal of the season off a penalty corner orchestrated by Yeager, while Ella Hampson found the back of the net for her first goal of the season, assisted by Helena Grosse. Bressler managed a shot on goal, but it was saved by Caponiti. Despite McKenna making a save, the Huskies were unable to cut into the deficit during the quarter.
The fourth quarter commenced with the Huskies' Hollander initiating a penalty corner at 48:07, followed by a blocked shot from Pien Prins and a saved attempt by Hollander shortly after. Despite these early efforts, Princeton extended their lead to 5-0 with a goal by Grosse at 49:32, assisted by Yeager. UConn's Avianna Wagner entered as goalie at 51:56 and later made a significant save against Ella Cashman's shot at 58:53, while Olivia McKenna's shot went wide, keeping UConn scoreless through the quarter. A late green card on Bujes summed up the challenging period for the visitors.
The next challenge for the Huskies comes as they travel to Villanova, PA, to face Villanova on September 19 at 3 p.m.
