Mooney and O'Connor Earn Second Team All-America Honors

EUGENE, Ore.- UConn men's track and field decathletes Josh Mooney (Stonington, Conn.) and Diarmuid O'Connor (Cork, Ireland) were both named to the NCAA All-America Second Team after two days of the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.Â
In just his sophomore season, Mooney finished in 12th place with 7,662 points, becoming the 30th UConn men's track and field athlete to receive all-American honors. On day 1, Mooney won the first heat of the 100m on Wednesday with a time of 10.86, taking home 8th overall. In the long jump, he finished 16th overall at 6.85m. The sophomore placed 21st in the shot put at 11.52, 17th in the high jump at 1.89m, and finished day 1 with a time of 49.53 in the 400m, finishing 15th in the event. On day 2, Mooney finished third in the 110m hurdles at 14.18, tying the tenth-best mark in program history. In the discus, Mooney finished 19th with a throw of 39.85m. Mooney set a personal best in the pole vault, finishing 7th at 4.71m. The highlight of the competition for the sophomore from Connecticut was his performance in the javelin, winning the event with a throw of 66.96m. Mooney concluded his second day with a time of 4:44.15 in the 1500m, good for 14th overall.Â
O'Connor was named second team all-American for the second consecutive season after finishing in 15th place with 7,580 points. O'Connor is the first Husky to earn all-American honors in consecutive seasons since Craig Hunter in 2015 and 2016. On day 1, O'Connor took 14th in the 100m dash at 10.93, and 21st overall in the long jump at 6.73m. In the shot put, O'Connor took home 9th at 13.92m, and 14th in the high jump at 1.92m. O'Connor wrapped up day 1 with a 400m time of 48.91, finishing 10th in the event. On day 2, O'Connor placed 10th in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.81, and 18th in the discus with a throw of 38.13m. O'Connor also set a perosnal best in the pole vault, finishing 12th in the event at 4.51m. O'Connor finished his day with a 17th palce finish in the javelin at 49.23, and a standout performance in the 1500m, garnering 2nd with a personal best time of 4:22.52
O'Connor and Mooney are the first pair of Husky teammates to earn all-America honors in the same season since 2016 (Hunter & Cory Duggan).
Maresa Hense (Germany) and Enaji Muhammad (Branford, Conn.) will compete tomorrow in the heptathlon and high jump, respectively
