Huskies Fall to Nebraska in Opening Round of NCAA Tournament

BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 3 seeded UConn softball team lost to the No. 2 seeded Nebraska Huskers, 10-2 on Friday afternoon at Tiger Park. The loss puts the Huskies in the loser's bracket of the Baton Rouge regional.
Payton Kinney made her 35th start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. Kinney went just 1.0 inning giving up four runs on just one hit. Kinney moves to 15-6 this season.
Nebraska opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four runs on a pair of hits.
Hope Jenkins came on in relief for Kinney in the middle of the second inning, making her 32nd appearance of the season for the Huskies. Jenkins went 4.2 innings giving up six runs on nine hits, adding a strikeout.
Nebraska added three runs to their lead with a three-run home run in the third inning, extending the Huskers lead to 7-0.
UConn got on the board in the top of the fourth inning off the bat of the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Cat Petteys. The rookie shortstop hit a no-doubt two-run home run to left field, her 15th of the year, trimming into the Nebraska lead, 7-2.
Nebraska added a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth innings, ending the game in a six inning run rule.

- Haley Coupal recorded her fifth straight multi-hit game of the season, giving her 12 this season.

UConn moves to the loser's bracket of the Baton Rouge regional and will face the host school LSU on Saturday, May 17 in an elimination game. First pitch is set for 3:30pm EST and will be streamed on ESPN+.
